New Possibilities

I don’t think that’s what I was supposed to see.

After we returned from the other universe, although I don’t know if we can say that we were ever anywhere else, I spoke to Trance and then Harper. Trance couldn’t really give any answers. She had been on the outside of the whole thing and even if she hadn’t been, she was still someone who could command multiple realities.

She was probably used to it.

Harper was working in the machine shop when I found him. Beka had just left, something for which I was grateful, and for some reason Harper looked a little crisp around the edges.

“Do you have a moment, Mr. Harper?” Harper jumped a little.

“Geez, don’t sneak up on a person like that, Rhade.” Harper looked at me for a moment, an odd look on his face. “Sure, go ahead.” he continued working on the equipment in front of him. I knew he was still listening though.

“When we went through the route of ages-”

“Yeah that was pretty trippy, huh? It felt really wierd like I was watching my past but living it at the same time. I’d say something then hear myself say it again.”

“You saw things you had done in the past? You didn’t see anything that you knew hadn’t happened?” Harper looked up from his work, a frown of confusion on his face.

“No.” he drew out the word as if he was trying to make some time to figure out what I was saying. “Why? What did you see?”

“I can’t say for sure but it was not my past.” I answered absentmindedly. “Thank you Harper.” I left, ignoring Harper’s attempts at learning more.

One example is not proof positive, I tried to tell myself.

And yet, how else can I explain it?

If I tried to figure out what I was seeing by just looking at what I saw, I would still see the evidence of my abberation.

The red/beige uniforms of the High Guard had been abandoned centuries ago.

There had never been, to my knowledge, a hologram of Dylan as a Go partner on the Adromeda.

The first could be explained as a memory come down from my ancestor. But the second...

“Commander?” I almost growled at the voice that interrupted my thoughts. Almost. I looked at the hologram of the ship’s AI.

“Andromeda, has there ever been a hologram of Dylan made?” It didn’t hurt to ask. Though, today was definitely my day for odd looks.

“No, Commander. Are you OK?” It took me a moment to answer.

“Yes, thank you Andromeda, I’m fine.”

I knew I would be, now that I had joined Dylan’s crew. I could say that my destiny lie here on this ship.

I had come here to learn from Dylan but I had a feeling that I would learn more about myself than I could ever have on Tarazed or on any other High Guard or Commonwealth ship.

THE END
